✪ Notes
un bosseur = a hard-worker. Ex ‘Véronique est une bosseuse, elle ira loin’ (Veronica is a hard worker; she'll go far)
comprends-moi bien✨ = don’t get me wrong. A wonderful snippet to throw into any conversation and sound super French!
mon héros = catches English-speakers out because of the ’s’ at the end. It’s just weird like that.
n'est-ce pas ? ✨ = isn’t it ? / right ?. It’s not used a lot in spoken French anymore so be careful. We’d say "...hein?" or "...pas vrai?”.
If you ever come across a phrase you’ve seen before or want to see more examples of - you can search all my dialogues on the Substack website, just tap the 🔍
travail acharné = hard work. Alt. = sport ✨ (colq.) (and yes.. you read that right! lol) Ex. (Riding a bike uphill is hard work.)
gentil de ta part = nice of you / good of you. “Sylvie te passe le bonjour — C’est sympa de sa part” (Sylvie says hello - That's nice of her)
*✨ = especially ‘Frenchie’ words/phrases you should try and use more
*🧩 = ‘canned’ expressions or phrases that are best learned as a whole, like puzzle-pieces.
Writing Prompt ✍️
I’m with Margot on this one! I looked up to my grandmother. Unconditional love is something we all thrive off of and need. Her resilience in overcoming life's challenges, her kindness towards others, and her unwavering support really made me who I am. 🥲
All answers are welcome. One word.. or one sentence.
Write me your answer in the comments. I can’t wait to read them! 👇🏼
Translation
G: Who do you admire in life?
M: Ah, that's a good question. I think it's my grandmother. She's really a hard worker and an inspiration to me. What about you?
G: For me, it's Elon Musk. Don't get me wrong, it's not because he's a billionaire. It's because he's constantly pushing back the boundaries of what's possible.
M: It's true, it's very inspiring. My grandmother, she's been through so much and she's still so strong and positive. She's my hero.
G: I know what you mean. When you have people like that in your life, it gives you a kind of guide, doesn't it?
M: Yes, exactly. And it's interesting to see how our heroes can be very different, but they all have something in common.
G: Yes, that's true. Whether it's your grandmother or Elon Musk, they both have a strong sense of determination and hard work.
M: Absolutely. That's what makes them worthy of admiration. And I hope I can bring those same qualities into my own life.
G: I'm sure you can, M. You already have many of those qualities.
M: But it's really nice of you to say that.
