You guys really seem to love the new French 101 🇫🇷 series, it’s getting a lot of engagement, and here we are back with another one.
And today it’s another classic topic : holidays. Perhaps a little cruel to throw this one out as we come into winter .. but maybe some of you are planning a little winter sun! 🙊

Jules : Salut Mathis ! Alors, toujours prêt à mettre les voiles ✪ ce week-end ?
— Hi Mathis! So you're still ready to set sail this weekend?
Mathis : Oui, Jules ! Allez c'est parti, on part en vacances ! C'est la première fois que je vais à l’étranger depuis le début de la pandémie. J’ai tellement hâte !
— Yes, Jules! We're off on holiday! It's the first time I've been abroad since the start of the pandemic. I can't wait!
Jules : Ah ouais, je te comprends. Ce n'est pas la porte à côté ✪, aller à l’étranger après une si longue période. Tu vas où exactement ?
— Oh yeah, I know what you mean. It's a bit of a step to go abroad after such a long time. Where exactly are you going?
Mathis : Je vais en Espagne, dans un gîte près de la plage. Ça va être tellement bien de voir autre chose que notre ville.
— I'm going to Spain, to a gîte near the beach. It's going to be so nice to see something other than our town.
Jules : C'est génial, mec ! Mais avec la situation actuelle, tu n'as pas peur d’avoir des ennuis ✪, genre restrictions ou tests ?
— That's great, man! But with the current situation, aren't you worried about getting into trouble, like restrictions or tests?
Mathis : J'y ai pensé, mais j'ai tout vérifié. Les mesures sont plutôt souples là-bas actuellement. Et puis, t'inquiètes ✪, je prends toutes les précautions nécessaires.
— I thought about it, but I checked everything out. Things are pretty relaxed over there at the moment. And don't worry, I'm taking all the necessary precautions.
Jules : C’est rassurant ! Tu as bien raison de profiter. On a tous besoin de un petit break. Je dois attendre les grandes vacances avec les gosses. Mais bon voyage, en tout cas!
— That's reassuring! You're right to take advantage. We all need a little break. I have to wait for the summer holidays with the kids. But have a good trip!
Mathis : Merci, merci. Je compte les heures. Vivement ✪ les vacances hein.
— Thank you, thank you. I'm counting the hours. I can hardly wait.

✪ Notes
mettre les voiles = lit. set sail, but more informally it means to be off’. “Je ne supporte plus cette situation, je mets les voiles” (I can't put up with this situation anymore. I'm off.)
ce n'est pas la porte à côté 🧩 = ce n’est pas tout près ; c’est loin = it’s a long way / it’s a big step
avoir des ennuis = have problems / be in trouble. “Tu pourrais avoir des ennuis pour ça.” (You can get in trouble for that)
t'inquiètes ✨= the French ways to say “don’t worry” in an informal setting. Most of us will cut it down to this (“ne t'inquiète pas” is the ‘full’ expression) - sound like a native!
vivement ✨= roll on… easiest for English users to just remember and use in this way. More common in spoken French than ‘roll on’ would be in English - you can say it about lots of things. Try it!
*✨ = especially ‘Frenchie’ words/phrases you should try and use more
*🧩 = ‘canned’ expressions or phrases that are best learned as a whole, like puzzle-pieces.
