Today’s edition is a long-awaited topic : the job interview. It’s quite a suitable topic if you’re anything like my circle of friends who seem to have moved around quite a bit recently.
While having a real interview in French is the top of the mountain (to be in France and have strong enough French to be able to carry out a job etc.) the colloquial and witty vocabulary and phrases that you’ll see in this more formal setting are worth their weight in gold!
This is a real powerhouse of a lesson with great colloquial phrases. Hopefully it might convince some more of you with high aspirations to subscribe to my full course.

Intervieweur : Bonjour. Veuillez garder une attitude professionnelle. Asseyez-vous s'il vous plaît.
Nathan : Ah, désolé, je pensais... Enfin, bref, c'est comme ça ✪.
[silence gênant]
Intervieweur : Parlez-moi de vous.
Nathan : Bien sûr. Je m'appelle Nathan, j'ai travaillé dans la conception graphique pendant cinq ans et j'adore ce que je fais.
Intervieweur : Quel est votre parcours professionnel?
Nathan : J'ai commencé en tant que stagiaire dans une petite entreprise, puis je suis passé à un rôle plus important dans une agence bien connue. Rien que d'en parler ✪, je me rends compte de tout le chemin parcouru.
Intervieweur : Quels sont vos faiblesses ? ✪
Nathan : Honnêtement, la programmation, c’est pas mon fort. Mais je suis toujours prêt à apprendre.
Intervieweur : Quand serez-vous disponible pour commencer ?
Nathan : Je peux commencer dès la semaine prochaine.
Intervieweur : Très bien, un point pour toi ✪ pour cette disponibilité rapide.
Nathan : Merci. J'espère que malgré mon entrée un peu... décontractée, je corresponds à ce que vous recherchez.

Je suis prems ✨(sur) = J'arrive en premier = I'm first. A childlike but (ironically) fun way to say “I’m first”. Like the English ‘shotgun” or “I call dibs”.
Enfin, bref ✨✨🧩 = Long story short / Anyhoo / Well, anyway… I trust you get the picture here! The French are stacking up concluding words here “Enfin” + “Bref” = the “Enfin, bref” supercharged French summary phrase! This is almost too much colloquial power for any student to handle.. use it wisely. 🙏🏻
C'est comme ça✨ = C'est la vie = That's how it is. Another French colloquial titan, you can (and the French do!) say “C'est comme ça” about anything and everything. Throw it at the end of nearly any sentence to sound more French.
Enfin, bref, c'est comme ça ✨✨✨ = You might have guessed it but when you stack this much Frenchness together you get a colloquial supernova. One use of this and a French person will be inviting you round to their balcony for an apero and a cigarette.
Rien que d'en parler = Just talking about it. rien que d'y penser = just thinking about it
Rien que d'en parler, j'ai l'eau à la bouche (Just talking about it makes my mouth water). J'ai déjà mal au dos, rien que d'y penser. (J'ai déjà mal au dos, rien que d'y penser.)
Un point pour toi = Bravo à toi = A point for you. A great conversation get-out-of-jail free card. If someone disagrees with you or points out you’re wrong, pull out this one and they’ll be suitably impressed and your humility AND your fluency
Tu as deviné la fin du film ? Un point pour toi, Sherlock ! (You guessed the end of the movie? A point for you, Sherlock!)
*✨ = especially ‘Frenchie’ words/phrases you should try and use more
*🧩 = ‘canned’ expressions or phrases that are best learned as a whole, like puzzle-pieces.
