The French 101 🇫🇷 Series ended last month, but I’ve had dozens of requests from students for dialogue lessons covering topics that could only be summarised as … living in France! 😊
So we’re doing it, launching a new series that will cover all the practical everyday situations you could ever hope to find yourself in while… living in France. Whether that’s on holiday, as an expat, or just in your dreams!

Today we’re back in Paris, and back doing some shopping. A vintage shopping spree, wallet in vintage tears. My negotiation skills involve mastering puppy eyes, and if that fails, haggling. My typical type of flea market adventure: come for lamp, leave with pet rock (and another house plant).
Une virée shopping vintage, un portefeuille en larmes vintage. Mes compétences en matière de négociation consistent à maîtriser les yeux des chiots et, en cas d'échec, à marchander. Mon type d'aventure typique au marché aux puces : je viens pour une lampe, je repars avec une pierre de compagnie (et une autre plante d'intérieur).

Eva: Une brocante ? Ça a l'air amusant ! On peut y trouver quoi exactement ?
Maxime: De tout ! On peut faire des affaires ✪ très amusantes, tu sais, comme des vieux livres, des bijoux, ou des objets d'art.
Eva: Super, j'adore chiner ✪ ! On dirait un vide-grenier ✪.
Maxime: Exactement ! Regarde, là-bas, ils vendent des fruits et légumes frais.
Eva: Oh, et là, un stand de vêtements vintage ! J'aime beaucoup le style.
Maxime: Tu sais, il faut marchander ici. Sinon, tu risques de mordre à l'hameçon ✪ et de payer trop cher.
Eva: Regarde cette lampe ! Elle serait parfaite dans mon salon. Je vais essayer de la négocier.
Maxime: Fais attention, c'est pas gagné ✪ avec ces vendeurs.
Eva: Bonjour, combien pour cette lampe ?
Vendeur: 30 euros.
Eva: C'est un peu cher... Que diriez-vous de 20 euros ?
Vendeur: D'accord, 20 euros c'est bien.
Eva: Génial, merci ! Regarde, Maxime, j'ai eu cette belle lampe pour 20 euros !
Maxime: C'est vrai, mais je pense que tu aurais pu l'avoir pour moins. Mais si elle te plaît, c'est le principal !

C: A flea market? That sounds fun! What can we find there exactly?
N: Everything! You can get really good deals, you know, like old books, jewelry, or art objects.
C: Great, I love rummaging! It's like a garage sale.
N: Exactly! Look, over there, they're selling fresh fruits and vegetables.
C: Oh, and there, a vintage clothing stand! I really like the style.
N: You know, you have to haggle here. Otherwise, you risk being taken in and paying too much.
C: Look at this lamp! It would be perfect in my living room. I'm going to try to negotiate.
N: Be careful, it's not going to be easy with these sellers.
C: Hello, how much for this lamp?
Seller: 30 euros.
C: That's a bit expensive... How about 20 euros?
Seller: Okay, 20 euros is fine.
C: Awesome, thank you! Look, Maxime, I got this beautiful lamp for 20 euros!
N: True, but I think you could have gotten it for less. But if you like it, that's the main thing!
✪ Notes
une brocante = a flea market, an antiques market. Quoi de mieux qu'une brocante pour dénicher des trésors cachés ? C'est comme une chasse au trésor pour adultes ! un vide-grenier = a garage sale. Moins formel qu'une brocante, mais tout aussi amusant pour trouver des objets uniques.
faire des affaires ✨ = réaliser de bonnes transactions = get good deals. C'est le mantra de tout chineur (bargain hunters) ! And your ticket to sounding like a savvy shopper in French. "En faisant des affaires, j'ai économisé une fortune." (By getting good deals, I saved a fortune.)
chiner = to rummage, to hunt for second-hand items. A fancy word for rummaging through old junk.
