Tick tock, what’s that? It’s time for some conditional tense.What I would do if some condition was met. Namely … dying in 24 hours.
It’s a bit grim, but high stakes make for good conversation—I think 💀
Warning 🚨 This is a stress-free zone. No freaking about about verb tenses allowed. Just follow the help in the ✪ Notes section. If it’s too hard, move on. That’s how language learning works. It’s always there for you to come back to.

PS. You’ve all inspired me with your regular exercise routines from earlier in the week! I’ve alway wanted to play tennis regularly, I think I might try and make it happen.

There’s quite a bit of niche vocabulary in this one - exciting activities you might want to do once in a lifetime. Don’t worry about memorising these words, but enjoy trying to work out what they might mean before reverting to the translation (That’s part of the reason the translation isn’t right next the text).

Hugo and Léa must be rather wealthy though… they’re spending a lot of money in these 24 hours! 💸

Dialogue du Jour

Hugo : Tu ferais ✪ quoi si tu n'avais plus que 24 ✪ heures à vivre, Léa ?

Léa : Eh bien, Hugo, je pense que je passerais du temps avec ma famille et mes amis proches. J'organiserais une grande fête pour célébrer la vie et partager des souvenirs. Et toi ?

Hugo : C'est une belle idée. Moi, je crois que je ferais un tour en montgolfière pour voir le monde d'en haut une dernière fois. Puis, je passerais le reste de la journée avec mes proches ✪.

Léa : Le tour en montgolfière, c'est original ✪! J'aimerais aussi faire quelque chose d'unique ✪. Peut-être un saut en parachute pour ressentir cette ultime montée d'adrénaline.

Hugo : Ça doit être incroyable comme expérience. En parlant d'adrénaline, je profiterais aussi de ces dernières heures pour faire une course de voitures sur un circuit.

Léa : Ah oui, ça, c'est une expérience que je n'ai jamais tentée ✪, mais ça doit être grisant. Sinon, je pense que je voudrais aussi dire à toutes les personnes qui comptent pour moi à quel point je les aime.

Hugo : C'est important de le leur dire, surtout dans un moment pareil. Et si on avait encore un peu de temps, pourquoi ne pas partir en voyage éclair dans un endroit où l'on a toujours rêvé d'aller ?

Léa : J'adore cette idée ! Un dernier voyage inoubliable pour finir en beauté. Je choisirais peut-être une île paradisiaque pour profiter de la plage et de la mer. 

Hugo : Moi, je partirais en Islande pour voir les aurores boréales. Ce serait une manière poétique de terminer cette aventure qu'est la vie.

✪ Notes

tu ferais - oh hey there conditional tense! Let’s be friends. Look out for ‘em in this dialogue. That imperfect ending after the full infinitive makes them easy to spot. See here 🔗 to review the conjugation stuff for conditional. Today’s dialogue is an easy opportunity to brush up a little. No overwhelming negative emotions though.. you hear me? It’s never worth it.

être, faire, aller, avoir (the usual suspects) are irregular: je serais, ferais, irais, aurais.

24 = vingt-quatre. 12 = douze, une douzaine (a dozen). 100 = cent, une centaine. une poignée = a handful

mes proches = my loved ones/relatives

c'est original ! = kind of the ultimate compliment from a French person 😌 (unless they’re being ironic!)

quelque chose de = *always include this ‘de’ after quelque chose*, English speakers miss it all the time, and when you include it French ears notice! Ex. ‘Si on va au cinéma, je veux voir quelque chose de drôle’, quelque chose de spécial, quelque chose de different. Remember the de! 🫵🏻

tenter = to try/to attempt Ex. “Il a tenté de résoudre le problème”

If I had only 24 hours left, it would be a hot air balloon ride for me too. The freedom and the absolute silence are just so unique. I imagine it would feel like floating in a peaceful, tranquil dream, observing the world's beauty from above one last time. I’d want some loved ones with though.

Alors, tu ferais quoi si tu n'avais plus que 24 heures à vivre ? 💬

Translation

H: What would you do if you only had 24 hours to live, L?

L: Well, H, I think I would spend time with my family and close friends. I would throw a big party to celebrate life and share memories. How about you?

H: That's a great idea. I think I would take a hot air balloon ride to see the world from above one last time. Then, I would spend the rest of the day with my loved ones.

L: A hot air balloon ride is original! I would also like to do something unique. Maybe a parachute jump to feel that ultimate adrenaline rush.

H: It must be an incredible experience. Speaking of adrenaline, I'd also like to take advantage of these last few hours to race a car on a circuit.

L: Oh yeah, that's an experience I've never tried, but it must be exhilarating. Otherwise, I think I would also like to tell all the people who are important to me how much I love them.

H: It's important to tell them, especially at a time like this. And if we still had some time, why not go on a whirlwind trip to a place we've always wanted to go?

L: I love that idea! A last unforgettable trip to end on a high note. Maybe I would choose an island paradise to enjoy the beach and the sea. 

H: I would go to Iceland to see the Northern Lights. It would be a poetic way to end this adventure that is life.
