Today’s dialogue is about books and bookshops. And visiting bookshops just feels so.. French. If/when you’re in Paris a bookshop or two are a must visit.
Personally, I really love mulling around a bookshop but actually reading a book is always.. a little trickier. But today’s dialogue is filled with vocabulary useful in any situation and contains one of the most wonderful French phrases ever for saying you feel a little down: “j’ai le cafard” ('I have the cockroach’🪳).. check it out below.

Kylian : Salut Jeanne, quel est le dernier livre que tu as lu ?
— Hi J, what was the last book you read?
Jeanne : Coucou Kylian. En fait, je viens de terminer un recueil de poésies ✪. J'adore la façon dont les mots sont tissés en une sorte de mélodie. Ça me rappelle un peu les concerts de musique classique que j'aime tant.
— Hi K. I've just finished a collection of poems. I love the way the words are woven into a sort of melody. It reminds me a bit of the classical music concerts that I love so much.
Kylian : C'est intéressant. Je dois avouer que je ne lis pas souvent de poésie. J'étais plutôt plongé dans une intrigue ✪ de roman policier ces derniers temps.
— That's interesting. I have to admit that I don't often read poetry. I've been more immersed in a detective story recently.
Jeanne : Oh, tu aimes les thrillers ? C'est tout le contraire de ce que je lis habituellement. Tu l'as emprunté ✪ où ton livre ?
— Oh, you like thrillers? It's the complete opposite of what I usually read. Where did you borrow your book?
Kylian : Je l'ai pris à la librairie du coin ✪. Ils ont un coin pour emprunter des livres, c'est super pratique.
— I got it from the local bookshop. They've got a corner where you can borrow books, which is really handy.
Jeanne : C'est génial ! Je devrais y jeter un coup d'œil. J'ai une étagère ✪ qui commence à être un peu vide.
— That's great! I should take a look at it. My bookshelf is getting a bit bare.
Kylian : J’ai le cafard ✪ en ce moment, alors je lis beaucoup pour me changer les idées ✪. Je peux te faire une suggestion de livre si tu veux ?
— I've been feeling a bit down at the moment, so I've been reading a lot to take my mind off things. I can make a book suggestion if you like?
Jeanne : Oui, pourquoi pas ? Je suis toujours ouverte à de nouvelles découvertes. Et ça pourrait être une bonne occasion d'élargir mes horizons littéraires.
— Yes, why not? I'm always open to new discoveries. And this could be a good opportunity to broaden my literary horizons.

un recueil de poésies = a collection of poems. un roman = a novel. un coup de cœur ✨ = a book you really enjoyed, a favourite (love love love this turn of phrase.. isn’t it just so.. French)
la intrigue = the plot
tisser = to weave, emprunter = to borrow
la librairie du coin = the local bookshop
une étagère = a shelve. une bibliothèque = a bookcase. Little words like this can slip through the net when learning vocabulary but are very practical and come up more often than you’d think! Lot’s of things can be described as shelves it turns out…
j’ai le cafard ✨🧩 = être un peu déprimé = lit. I have the cockroach🪳, but bear with us here. It means to feel depressed / feel down / have the blues. The connection with melancholy was apparently invented by the famous French poet Baudelaire. It’s a classic french phrase to know and to use, French people use it regularly!
me changer les idées ✨ = clear my head, take my mind of things
*✨ = especially ‘Frenchie’ words/phrases you should try and use more
*🧩 = ‘canned’ expressions or phrases that are best learned as a whole, like puzzle-pieces.
