I’m trying to navigate creating a project here that is self-sustaining (ie. makes enough money so I can keep putting time and energy and love into it) while also not annoying or alienating readers who want free resources.
If that’s you - reach out (just hit reply) and tell me what I’m doing wrong or could do better. It’s what allows me to improve!

Today we’re back to a Conversation Starter ☕️, and a topic that may pull some heartstrings, may have some of us feeling nostalgic, or proud, or even joyous. Who knows.
I’ve heard that the objects we surround ourselves with are—in some sense—part of who we are. Humans will always and forever instinctually cocoon themselves in a nest of little trinkets, bedside and travelling necessities, valuables, cherished items. It’s what we do. Losing those things (for instance when you go to prison, or a house burns down) can mean losing a part of who you are.
Today we’ll hear a conversation about what our most precious item is. I hope you enjoy.

— Hi M, tell me, what's the most precious thing you own?
— Hi E, that's an interesting question. If we're talking about monetary value, I'd say it's my house. But if we're talking about sentimental value, it's definitely the necklace my grandmother gave me.
— Yeah, that makes sense. Some things are priceless. For me, it's an old photo of my family. It's not worth much in monetary terms, but it's precious to me.
— It's true, some things are worth more for what they represent than for what they cost. You know, I'd never put that necklace on the line, no matter what.
Eliot : Je suis totalement d'accord.
— I totally agree. As they say in French, "L'argent ne fait pas le bonheur". The things that really matter can't be measured in money.
Mathilde : Absolument.
— Absolutely, E. Valuable objects aren't always the most expensive. Often, they're the ones that mean the most to us.
✪ Notes
le collier = bijou pour le cou = necklace, un collier de perles (a pearl necklace). boucles d'oreilles = earrings. un bracelet = well, I think you can guess that one!
Y a ✨= Il y a = If no one points it out to you, little things like this can go un-noticed. French people drop the ‘il’ all the time! Once I tell my students they often start hearing it all the time!
Don’t try and force it too soon, but dropping ‘Y a’ (“E-ya”) in conversation is a sure tell of a more fluent French speaker.
mettre en jeu ✨ = risquer = bring into play / involve (by extension: put at stake/risk). “Apprendre à lire met en jeu de nombreuses compétences” (Learning to read involves many skills).
