Sophie : Alors, Pierre, quoi de neuf ? ✪ Qu'est-ce que tu as fait ce week-end ?

Pierre : J'ai passé le week-end à camper dans les montagnes. C'était vraiment génial ! Et toi ?

Sophie : J'ai visité la ville avec des amis. On a visité le musée d'art et on a fait du shopping.

Pierre : Cool ! J'adore le shopping, mais le camping, c’est vraiment mon truc. C'était vraiment agréable de respirer l'air frais et de se déconnecter un peu de la vie urbaine.

Sophie : Oui, je comprends. Mais j'aime bien aussi la vie urbaine. Il y a tellement de choses à voir et à faire dans une ville.

Pierre : Absolument ! Et qu'est-ce que tu as acheté pendant ta journée shopping ?

Sophie : J'ai acheté une nouvelle robe et des chaussures. Je les ai mises hier soir pour une soirée.

Pierre : Waouh, t'es une vraie ✪! J'ai tendance à porter des vêtements de camping en toute occasion.

Sophie : Haha, c'est vrai. Mais chacun ses goûts ✪, n'est-ce pas ✪?

Pierre : Absolument ! Et c'était comment la soirée hier soir ?

Sophie : C'était génial ✪ ! On a dansé toute la nuit et j'ai rencontré de nouvelles personnes. Et toi, qu'est-ce que tu as fait d'autre pendant le week-end ?

Pierre : J'ai fait une randonnée dans les montagnes et j'ai pêché un peu. C'était vraiment paisible et calme.

Sophie : Ouah, ça a l'air génial  ! J'adore la nature et la randonnée. Je devrais peut-être essayer le camping un jour.

✪ Notes

quoi de neuf ?  ✨🧩 = what's up? - a pretty perfect translation, laid back and familiar. A perfect phrase to start seasoning your stuffy textbook French with some real-life freshness.

t'es une vrai-e ✨ = you're a real one. Used to emphasize someone's characteristic or skill. It's like saying, "You're a true example of [something].” But then in real speech you drop the thing! “Avec ce gâteau, t'es une vraie (pâtissière)!" ("With that cake, you're a real pastry chef!")

ses goûts = ses préférences = his/her tastes Everyone has their own preferences, right? “chacun ses goûts" ✨ is a wonderful way to acknowledge that - and you can throw it into any conversation. "to each their own." Example: "Je préfère le thé au café, mais chacun ses goûts." ("I prefer tea over coffee, but to each their own.")

génial ✨ = formidable, super = awesome, great. We’re covering the real fundamentals and this is one of them. When learning a language it pays to nearly always be positive - when you want to say something positive (or have nothing else to say in response!) this is your trusty friend. “On va se marier ! - C’est génial !” - "We're getting married! - That's great!.

*✨ = especially ‘Frenchie’ words/phrases you should try and use more
*🧩 = ‘canned’ expressions or phrases that are best learned as a whole, like puzzle-pieces.

Défi de difficulté 🧠🔨

✨New✨ Pour nos étudiants un peu plus avancés. Une section bonus qui contient le subjonctif et le conditionnel. Bonne chance. Il est tout à toi.

Pierre : Tu devrais, c'est une expérience incroyable. Il faut que tu viennes avec nous la prochaine fois, pour que tu puisses vraiment comprendre pourquoi j'aime tant ça. Rien n'est plus ressourçant que de se retrouver en pleine nature.

Sophie : J'accepte ton invitation, à condition que tu viennes faire du shopping en ville avec moi un de ces jours. Il est essentiel d'expérimenter différentes activités pour vraiment apprécier la diversité de nos passions.

Translation

S: So, Pierre, what's up? What did you do this weekend?

P: I spent the weekend camping in the mountains. It was really awesome! And you?

S: I visited the city with friends. We went to the art museum and did some shopping.

P: Cool! I love shopping, but camping is really my thing. It was so nice to breathe the fresh air and disconnect a bit from city life.

S: Yes, I understand. But I also like city life. There's so much to see and do in a city.

P: Absolutely! And what did you buy during your shopping day?

S: I bought a new dress and shoes. I wore them last night to a party.

P: Wow, you're a real fashionista! I tend to wear camping clothes on every occasion.

S: Haha, that's true. But everyone has their own tastes, right?

P: Absolutely! And how was the party last night?

S: It was great! We danced all night and I met new people. And you, what else did you do over the weekend?

P: I went hiking in the mountains and did a bit of fishing. It was really peaceful and quiet.

S: Wow, that sounds awesome! I love nature and hiking. Maybe I should try camping one day.

If you can translate each of these sentences after the lesson then you’re making real progress. They can also me used as flashcards.

1. J'ai passé une soirée incroyable à regarder les étoiles, loin de l'agitation de la ville.

2. En matière de mode, le shopping est ma passion, mais trouver la bonne affaire demande du temps.  

3. Chacun ses goûts, mais je trouve que la cuisine épicée a quelque chose de spécial.

Une Façon d'utiliser ce Dialogue

These dialogues are a very simple tool. Yet this allows them to be versatile and endlessly flexible to you and your learning style. 
Here’s one way you could use the dialogue this week:

• 🥪 Listening sandwich - Listen to the recording x3 times, then read the dialogue and fill in your understanding, then listen again.

This is a great way for beginners to boost their oral comprehension in small helpful doses. Listening first exercises your brain, and listening again after studying allows you solidifying the connections. It’s also encouraging as you can see what you’ve learned !
