Bonjour ! Amélie here. 👋

My French level test checks the one skill most tests skip: whether you understand French when someone actually speaks it.

The short answer: It is a free, two-minute listening test. You hear eight short clips of spoken French that climb from A2 to full Parisian speed, answer one question per clip, and get your level, from A2 to C1, plus a report card showing exactly which clip lost you. Take the free listening test.

What does this French level test measure?

Listening. That is the whole job.

Most French level tests online are reading tests in disguise: a sentence with a gap, four verb forms, pick the right one. Fine for filling gaps, less fine when a waiter asks « vous avez choisi ? » at full speed and your brain is still conjugating.

This test plays spoken French and asks what you understood. No spelling, no grammar tables, no subjunctive traps. Each clip is built around an expression French people really use, like « ça vaut le coup », « c’est la galère » or « tiré par les cheveux », because that is where learners lose the thread. Not on the verb endings. On the everyday phrases, said fast and linked together.

Your result lands in one of four bands: A2, B1, B2 or C1. Those are CEFR levels, the same scale French courses, podcasts and exams use, so you can hold your result up against what a course says it expects and know straight away whether it fits.

How does the French placement test work?

Headphones on, press start. Then:

  1. You hear a short clip of spoken French.
  2. You answer one multiple-choice question about it.
  3. Next clip, one notch harder.

There are eight clips. Two at A2, then A2+, B1, B1+, B2, B2+, and a final clip at full Parisian speed: the linking, the dropped letters and the slang you hear between two friends in a café. The whole thing takes about two minutes.

Every clip is adapted from one of my real monthly level tests, so you are hearing the same kind of French my lessons are built on, not sentences written for a quiz.

Use it as a placement test before you choose a podcast, a course or a class. Start the two-minute French level test.

What does your result tell you, and what happens next?

At the end I ask for your email. Then your level appears on the page and your report card goes to your inbox.

The scoring is simple:

  • 0 to 3 right: A2
  • 4 to 6 right: B1
  • 7 right: B2
  • 8 out of 8: C1

The report card is the useful part. It lists every clip, the expression it was testing, the one that got you, and the lesson where I teach that expression. So you don’t just get a letter. You get the exact spot where your ears gave up, and somewhere to go fix it.

Your email also puts you on my free list: one real French dialogue a week, with audio. Unsubscribe whenever you like.

How is it different from other French level tests?

Three things.

It tests your ears, not your grammar. A grammar quiz measures what you know when you have time to think. A conversation never gives you that time. Lots of learners read comfortably and still freeze when two French people talk to each other. If that is you, why you can read French but can’t hear it explains the gap and how to close it.

It uses everyday French, not textbook French. The clips get faster and more colloquial the way real speech does. The last one is how French people talk when they forget you are there.

It is not an official exam. The DELF, DALF and TCF are full exams that test several skills and give you a certificate. This test gives you a fast, honest read on one skill, listening, for free. If you need a certificate for a visa or a job, book the exam. If you need to know what to listen to tomorrow, take this.

What should you do with your French level?

Your level tells you what to listen to next. Here is where I would send you in my lessons:

  • A2: start with 🇫🇷 French 101, the textbook scenarios done the way French people actually speak. Replay each dialogue with the text in front of you until the words come apart.
  • B1: this is the plateau, and it breaks with real dialogues, not more grammar. ☕️ Conversation Starters gives you real conversations to have with a tutor, a partner or friends. 🗼 Paris Series is for travelling to France, and 🥖 Vivre en France for living there, or dreaming of it. For a realistic timeline, read how long it takes to get from B1 to B2.
  • B2: go to 🔥 Hot Issues, where my dialogues discuss what France is actually talking about, at full speed, opinions flying.
  • C1: your ears are past the classroom. What is left is polish: slang, jokes, people talking over each other at dinner. 🔥 Hot Issues is the deep end. Stay there.

Whatever your level, the method is the same: short, real dialogues, replayed until you stop translating. My French listening practice guide has a 20-minute routine for it. Not sure which band you are in yet? Take the free listening test first, then come back to this list.

FAQ

How long does the French level test take?

About two minutes. Eight short clips, one question each. Most of that time is spent listening, which is the point.

Which levels does it cover?

A2 to C1. The clips climb from A2 to B2+, then finish at full Parisian speed. Score 0 to 3 and you are A2, 4 to 6 is B1, 7 is B2, and a perfect eight is C1. Total beginners will land in A2, which is exactly where to start.

Is the test free?

Yes. No card, nothing to cancel. You give your email at the end to see your result, and that is the whole price.

Do I need an account?

No. No password, no profile, no sign-up form. I ask for your email once, at the end, so I can show your result and send your report card. Retake it in the same visit and I won’t ask again.

Is it accurate?

It is accurate about one thing, on purpose: whether you understand spoken French at each speed. Each clip targets one level and one everyday expression, so your score shows where you start losing the thread. It does not grade grammar, writing or speaking, and it is not a DELF or TCF result. Eight clips are a snapshot, not a certificate.

Can I retake it?

Yes, as often as you like. There is a retake button on the result screen. Best use: take it today, train your ears for a month, then take it again and see if the clip that got you still gets you.
