French Conversation Questions with English Translations

Amélie Laurent·Updated ·11 min read·Guides

Bonjour ! Amélie here. 👋

These are the French conversation questions I give my own students, with English translations.

The fastest way to get a French conversation going is to ask a good question, then actually understand the answer. Here are forty questions French people really ask each other, from “what do you do?” to “do you believe in aliens?”.

Each one comes with the English, the vous version for strangers and anyone older or more senior, and a short model answer you can steal. Every question is also a lesson from my ☕️ Conversation Starters series, where two French speakers answer it in a real, colloquial dialogue. Click Hear it answered to read it.

How to use this list: pick one question a day. Read the model answer, change it so it is true for you, and say it out loud. Then open the lesson and notice how a French speaker answers the same question: shorter, faster, and far less tidy than any textbook.

Tu or vous? Use tu with friends, family, children and anyone your age in a relaxed setting. Use vous with strangers, in shops, at work until told otherwise, and with anyone older. Spoken questions also drop the textbook word order: tu fais quoi ? rather than que fais-tu ?.
